Every village and town along the Basque Coast has been forged by the sea. The Cantabrian Sea has shaped both the landscape and our people for thousands of years and promises an unbeatable view.
Itinerary
We will start this day-trip driving West from San Sebastian to get to Mutriku, an old fishing village that clings on to slopes that fall dizzyingly into the salty waters. We will go down through the perfectly preserved historic quarter along its steep narrow lanes until we find the port. Afterward continuing with our tour we will stop in Lekeitio a very picturesque fishing town famous for its gothic basilica. In the premises around the port, you will find numerous catering establishments and a very lively atmosphere. Seeing fresh fish being unloaded is not an unusual sight from any of the terraces. A nearby coastal town which is well-worth seeing is Elantxobe, which seems to have been conceived purely to put on the front of postcards, with houses that were built almost vertiginously on a slope and resemble a Roman amphitheater around the stage of the Cantabrian sea.
After a quick stop in Gernika, where you will learn more about the Basque History, we will pass the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai, to reach Mundaka, a charming little fishing village and one of the most famous surfing spots in Europe. Following the windy coastal road, we will stop to take a picture of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a unique rocky island that is connected to the coast by a stone bridge and a walk of 231 stone steps with a chapel at its peak and also known as DragonStone by Game Of Thrones fans!. On the way back to San Sebastian we will drive through Bakio, a beautiful little town surrounded by mountains and cliffs and one of the longest beach of the Biscay coastline, that attracts visitors. It is quite open to the sea, making it ideal for surfing
