Pilgrims that get this far on their way to Santiago de Compostela chose between two paths the Coast or Inland. The Coastal Route was the first route open by European Christianity, sheltered from the dangerous lands to the south and the Muslims living there. Nowadays is a lovely route over the cliffs next to the sea where fishing and agricultural regions, as well as urban and rural areas, coexist. After a short drive of 15 min, we will leave the car in Orio, a fishing town next to San Sebastián and we will start hiking across the Txakoli vineyards on our way to the surfing town of Zarautz.

After walking the beautiful promenade along the beach, we will head towards the charming fishing village of Getaria. The path is initially cobbled and step to later be paved and flat. We will pass several wineries and enjoy a beautiful view while we start going down the hill to finish the hike. Time for lunch. Despite being very small town it has a well-deserved reputation for its grilled fish restaurants, the Txakoli wine and its two illustrious sons: the famous fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga, and Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to circumnavigate the earth in 1517. After lunch, we will go for a stroll through this charming town before we come back to San Sebastian.
